RJD Vice President Shivanand Tiwary Sentenced in Defamation Case
Court Verdict and Immediate Consequences
Shivanand Tiwary, the national vice president of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), has been sentenced to a one-year imprisonment by a Patna court. This verdict comes as a result of a criminal defamation suit filed five years ago by Bihar minister Sanjay Kumar Jha. Tiwary, who has a political history as a former state minister, has also been ordered to pay a fine of Rs 10,000. The court granted Tiwary provisional bail and a 30-day period to appeal against the order.
Background of the Defamation Suit
Sanjay Kumar Jha, who currently oversees key departments in the Bihar government including Water Resources and Information and Public Relations, initiated the legal action in 2018. At the time, Jha was serving as the national general secretary of the Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)]. The lawsuit was in response to Tiwary’s comments regarding Jha’s close relationship with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the JD(U)’s paramount leader. This legal proceeding arrives amidst the political realignment in Bihar, with Kumar rejoining forces with the RJD, led by Lalu Prasad, Tejashwi Yadav’s father.
Tiwary’s Political Journey
Shivanand Tiwary, a seasoned socialist leader, has had a long-standing political journey spanning nearly five decades. During this time, he has been closely associated with both Lalu Prasad and Nitish Kumar, and has been a member of the political parties they founded at various times.
