Rising Prices in Pakistan Impact Ramadan Preparations

As Ramadan commences in Pakistan, there is growing concern over escalating prices of essential commodities, significantly impacting the economic struggles of low- to middle-income consumers. The inflation in prices, ranging from two to three times the regular rates, includes crucial kitchen items such as vegetables, sugar, edible oil, ghee, meat, eggs, and pulses. Unscrupulous traders exploiting the holy month contribute to this surge, with an overall increase of 31.5%, and certain food items experiencing up to a 60% spike in rates compared to pre-Ramadan levels.

Vegetable Prices Soar Amid Absence of Monitoring

In the absence of an effective price monitoring system, fruit and vegetable prices have seen substantial hikes. Onions, for instance, have doubled in price, reaching up to PKR 300 per kg. Potatoes, cabbage, green chilies, and capsicum have all experienced significant price increases, impacting the affordability of these essential items during Ramadan. The prices of various fruits, including bananas, apples, and melons, have also witnessed notable rises, adding to the economic challenges faced by consumers during this holy month.

Challenges for Low- to Middle-Income Consumers

As the nation enters Ramadan, the economic strain on low- to middle-income consumers intensifies, reflecting the broader impact of inflation on essential commodities. The need for effective price monitoring and measures to curb unscrupulous practices during Ramadan becomes crucial to ensure accessibility and affordability for all segments of the population.
