Renowned Urdu Poet Munawwar Rana Passes Away at the Age of 71
Prominent Urdu poet Munawwar Rana passed away at the age of 71 in Lucknow’s SGPGI Hospital on Sunday night, succumbing to a cardiac arrest. Rana had been grappling with a prolonged illness for several months, undergoing treatment for cancer, kidney, and heart-related ailments at the SGPGI Hospital.
His daughter, Sumaiya Rana, shared that her father would be laid to rest on Monday. Rana’s son, Tabrez Rana, revealed that the poet had been hospitalized for around 14 to 15 days, initially at Medanta in Lucknow and later at SGPGI, where he breathed his last at approximately 11 p.m. on Sunday.
Survived by his wife, four daughters, and a son, Munawwar Rana, born on November 26, 1952, in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh, was widely acclaimed for his significant contributions to Urdu literature, particularly through his ghazals. Notably, his poetic style, characterized by its accessibility, seamlessly blended Hindi and Awadhi words, steering clear of Persian and Arabic influences, resonating strongly with Indian audiences.
One of his most celebrated works, the poem ‘Maa,’ lauded the virtues of a mother within the traditional ghazal format. Over his illustrious career, Rana earned several accolades, including the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 2014 for his poetry book ‘Shahdaba.’ However, he returned the award a year later, expressing concerns about the growing intolerance in the country.
Rana was also honored with the Ameer Khusro Award, Mir Taqi Mir Award, Ghalib Award, Dr. Zakir Hussain Award, and the Saraswati Samaj Award. His works found translations into multiple languages, solidifying his international literary presence.
Having spent a significant part of his life in Kolkata, Rana was actively engaged in mushairas, both within India and overseas. Beyond his literary pursuits, the poet played a role in the political landscape of Uttar Pradesh, with his daughter Sumaiya being a member of the Samajwadi Party (SP), led by Akhilesh Yadav.
Despite his literary achievements, Munawwar Rana was not without controversy, drawing criticism for statements supporting the Taliban and equating it with Maharishi Valmiki. Additionally, he faced backlash for endorsing the murder of Samuel Paty in Paris in 2020 over a controversy related to Prophet Mohammad.
