Renowned Music Maestro Ustad Rashid Khan Passes Away at 55
Ustad Rashid Khan, the revered maestro of Indian classical music, succumbed to prostate cancer on Wednesday at a hospital in Kolkata. The 55-year-old artist, who was undergoing treatment and had been on a ventilator with oxygen support, passed away around 3:45 PM, confirmed an official from the private hospital where he was admitted.
Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, expressed her sorrow, stating, “This is a significant loss for our country and the entire music community. I am deeply pained by the news of Rashid Khan’s demise.”
The maestro’s health had severely deteriorated following a cerebral attack last month. Initially receiving treatment at Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital, he later chose to continue his medical care exclusively in Kolkata. Reports suggested that initially, Khan responded well to treatment, but his condition took a turn for the worse recently.
Born in Badayun, Uttar Pradesh, Rashid Khan hailed from the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana, and was the nephew of Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. He received initial training from his maternal grand-uncle, Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan (1909–1993). His uncle, Ghulam Mustafa Khan, recognized his musical talents and provided initial training in Mumbai. However, his primary tutelage was under Nissar Hussain Khan in Badayun.
At the age of eleven, Rashid Khan performed his debut concert, and in 1978, he graced the stage at an ITC concert in Delhi. In April 1980, when Nissar Hussain Khan joined the ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Calcutta, Rashid Khan, at 14, also became a part of the academy.
Known for his innovative fusion of classical Hindustani music with lighter genres, Rashid Khan delved into experimental collaborations. He showcased his adaptability by engaging in jugalbandis alongside sitarist Shahid Parvez and other musicians. Additionally, he explored collaborations with Western instrumentalists like Louis Banks, demonstrating his versatility and mastery in diverse musical realms.
