Relief for Air Passengers: Delhi Airport Completes Refurbishment of Second Runway

Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has successfully completed the re-carpeting and refurbishment of Runway 10/28, known as the second runway, at Indira Gandhi International Airport. Equipped with CAT III technology, the runway enhances safety during landings in adverse weather conditions, such as dense fog. Air passengers experiencing delays in winter due to weather-related issues can expect smoother operations with this upgrade. The runway has officially been transferred to Air Traffic Control for commercial use starting February 3, 2024.

CAT III Technology for Enhanced Safety

CAT III (Category III) technology is an advanced instrument landing system that allows aircraft to land in very low visibility conditions, including fog, rain, or snow. This technology is crucial for ensuring secure landings when visibility is severely limited. The operationalization of the CAT III-enabled Runway 10/28 aligns with the aviation industry’s commitment to safety and efficiency.

Impact on Passenger Experience and Airport Capacity

The re-carpeting and rehabilitation work on Runway 10/28, which included the induction of additional taxiways, aim to improve the overall passenger experience. With this completion, Delhi Airport is poised to handle operations at its full capacity, significantly benefiting air travelers. The enhanced airside capacity will contribute to accommodating a higher volume of passengers, marking a crucial step in the continuous development of airport infrastructure.
