Red Alert: Dense Fog Grips Delhi-NCR, Causes Travel Chaos
Weather Conditions and IMD Advisory
Today, the Delhi-NCR region experienced cold weather conditions coupled with moderate fog, with the minimum temperature in the national capital recorded at 10.7 degrees Celsius. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for dense fog, affecting several North Indian regions.
IMD Advisory and Travel Disruptions
The IMD’s advisory cautioned about dense fog across Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, north Rajasthan, and north Madhya Pradesh. It urged vigilance during commuting, recommending the use of fog lights and advised passengers to coordinate with airlines, railways, and state transport for any alterations in journey schedules.
The warning highlighted the anticipated challenges, emphasizing ‘difficult driving conditions,’ foreseeing slower journey times and potential diversions in airports, highways, and railway routes. Passengers traversing the national capital confronted disruptions as flights and trains grappled with delays and diversions due to low visibility.
Travel Woes and Delayed Transport
Numerous flights faced delays at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, tallying over 80 delayed flights until 8:30 am, attributable to the inclement weather. Passengers voiced their predicaments, citing delays caused by foggy conditions impacting their travel plans.
Drivers’ Perspectives on Fog Conditions
Auto and cab drivers remarked on the improved fog situation compared to the preceding day, indicating marginal amelioration. A cab driver noted, “The fog conditions today are a bit better as compared to yesterday.” This sentiment echoed the challenges encountered by drivers, citing prolonged travel times due to diminished visibility.
IMD’s Visibility Report and Varied Regions Affected
IMD’s report detailed the visibility levels across several regions, ranging from Pantnagar, Ludhiana, and Bhiwani to Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Varied visibility levels were recorded, underscoring the extensive reach of the fog’s impact across multiple states.
Republic Day Parade Preparations Amidst Adverse Weather
Despite the harsh weather in Delhi-NCR, preparations for the Republic Day parade remained underway at the Kartavya Path in the national capital, underscoring continued commitment amidst challenging climatic conditions.
The prevailing dense fog not only disrupted travel but also highlighted the need for caution and preparedness among commuters and organizers amid the persisting inclement weather.
