British police have made what is believed to be their largest-ever seizure of serious drugs, with 5.7 tonnes (5,700 kg) of cocaine found in a container at the port of Southampton on February 8.

Discovered hidden in a cargo of bananas from South America, the drugs had an estimated value of £450 million ($568 million) based on UK street prices.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) stated that the cocaine was likely headed to Hamburg, Germany, “for onward delivery.” This record-breaking seizure is a significant blow to international organized crime cartels, denying them massive profits, according to NCA director Chris Farrimond. The previous largest UK drug seizure was 3.7 tonnes of cocaine found in Southampton in 2022.
