Rajya Sabha Chairman Expresses Concern Over Mimicry Incident, Adjourns House Session

Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed dismay over a recent incident involving suspended Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee allegedly mimicking him during a protest within the Parliament premises. Dhankhar termed the act as “unacceptable” and highlighted its detrimental impact on the Chairman’s institution.

During the House’s assembly at 2 pm, following an adjournment, the Chairman expressed his anguish over the mimicry incident and adjourned the session until 3 pm. He raised concerns about the tarnished perception of the institution among the public due to such actions and called it a disheartening occurrence.

Referencing senior Congress leader P Chidambaram’s presence, Dhankhar expressed the distress he felt when a senior leader captured the act of a Member of Parliament mocking the Chairman—an act he deemed detrimental to the institution’s sanctity.

Highlighting the impact on his personal background and the Chairman’s position, Dhankhar emphasized the severity of the situation and the disrespect displayed towards the Chairmanship. He urged the House to acknowledge the gravity of the issue and refrain from such behavior.

Earlier, Dhankhar had voiced his disapproval of the incident, denouncing the mimicry of the Chairman and the Speaker. He described it as shameful, unacceptable, and reflective of a new low in parliamentary conduct.

The incident occurred amidst protests by suspended MPs, including Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party, who joined the demonstration against the government’s actions. These protests emerged following the suspension of 78 opposition MPs for the remainder of the ongoing ‘Winter Session,’ coupled with earlier suspensions, marking the largest number of suspensions in the history of Indian Parliament.
