Rajouri Deaths Mystery unresolved; Death Toll reaches 17

The sixth and last child of Mohammad Aslam, a resident of Badhaal village in Rajouri, Jammu division, succumbed at Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu on Thursday, raising the death toll in a ‘mysterious disease’ outbreak to 17.

An official said that Yasmeena Jan, the daughter of Mohammad Aslam, was initially admitted to GMC Rajouri on Sunday. She was later referred to GMC Jammu on Monday, where she passed away during treatment this evening.

Dr Ashutosh Gupta, Principal of GMC Jammu, confirmed her death, stating that her condition had been critical since her admission.

Talking to reporters here LG Sinha said, “The Health Department of J&K and other departments also conducted an investigation into the matter but the correct facts could not be ascertained.”

Yasmeena was the lone surviving child of Mohammad Aslam, who has now lost all six of his children—four daughters and two sons—to the unexplained illness. The family tragedy has also claimed the lives of Aslam’s maternal uncle and aunt, making it a total of 17 deaths within a week.
