Rajasthan Elections: The Tally Begins Amid High Stakes
The crucial process of counting votes for 199 out of the 200 assembly seats in Rajasthan commenced on Sunday morning. This follows a period of intense campaigning by major political parties, notably the incumbent Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The elections, which took place on November 25, have left the political fate of the state hanging in balance, with the majority mark set at 100 seats. However, in the Karanpur constituency, the elections were adjourned due to the demise of Congress candidate Gurmeet Singh Koonar.
Diverse Voter Turnout and Exit Poll Predictions
The state, boasting an electoral population of around 52 million, witnessed a voter turnout of 74.62% through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), with an additional 0.8% casting their votes through home-voting and postal ballots. Exit polls have suggested a tight contest in Rajasthan, a state known for not re-electing incumbent governments for nearly three decades. While some exit polls favor BJP as the clear winner, others indicate Congress leading in the race to form the next government. Today’s Chanakya survey highlighted that issues such as ‘development’ and ‘political party and candidate’ greatly influenced voters’ decisions.
Key Candidates and Issues at the Forefront
Key political figures in the fray include Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot (Sardarpura), former chief minister Vasundhara Raje (Jhalrapatan), and former deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot (Tonk). Gehlot’s stronghold, Sardarpura, and other key constituencies have been the focus of intense political activity, with BJP fielding strong candidates against Congress bastions. The campaign trail saw issues like violence against women, the paper leak scam, and farmers’ suicides being highlighted by the opposition BJP. CM Gehlot, meanwhile, has voiced confidence in breaking the state’s alternating government trend.
