Raj Bhawan Man Wali Mohammad rther passes away: Decades at Raj Bhawan Unveiled

Wali Mohammad, a living testament to the rich history of one of Jammu and Kashmir’s most influential administrative institutions, served five governors during his three-decade tenure. Shams Irfan explores Wali’s remarkable journey at Raj Bhawan, shedding light on the unique dynamics and historical anecdotes that shaped his experiences.

At the age of 82, Wali Mohammad, who started as a table boy under Maharaja Karan Singh’s appointment at Raj Bhawan, fondly reminisces about the days when he catered to grand parties hosting dignitaries and high officials. His journey began as a gardener in one of the Maharaja’s gardens, and it was Karan Singh himself who recognized Wali’s potential and appointed him as a table boy.

Reflecting on the era when Maharajas ruled Kashmir, Wali expresses nostalgia for a time of discipline and order. He contrasts it with the current state of chaos and laments the loss of societal values. Wali’s roots trace back to Zyeth Hyer Mohallah in Srinagar, but due to displacement ordered by Maharaja Hari Singh, his family relocated to Pampore.

Recalling the forced migration, Wali recounts the day Maharaja Hari Singh ordered the demolition of Zyeth Hyer and Theed Mohallah to clear his view of Kral Sangar Mountain. Despite the displacement, Hari Singh compensated each affected household generously, ensuring financial support for Wali’s family. Wali’s family settled in Pampore, where he joined them after completing his studies in Srinagar.

Wali emphasizes the lack of freedom to protest during Maharaja’s reign, where obeying official decrees was mandatory. Despite the challenges, he acknowledges the compensation provided to displaced families.

During his tenure at Raj Bhawan, Wali shares his encounter with Jagmohan, noting the governor’s initial disapproval, possibly due to Wali’s beard. However, a turning point occurred during the winter of 1987 when Karan Singh’s warm acknowledgment and endorsement prompted a change in Jagmohan’s attitude towards Wali.

Wali fondly recalls serving under various governors, naming Bhagwan Sahay as the best due to his gentlemanly demeanor. After completing 33 years of service, Wali retired in 1988. Today, he resides in Pampore, spending his days in prayer at a local mosque, cherishing the hope to witness his native Mohallah with its standing houses once again.
