‘Rail Roko’ Protest Deemed Successful by Farmer Leader
Sarwan Singh Pandher, a prominent farmer leader, declared the ‘Rail Roko’ protest staged by farmer unions as highly successful. The nationwide protest, held between 12 noon and 4 pm on Sunday, aimed to press for various demands, including a legal guarantee on Minimum Support Price (MSP) and loan write-offs.
Success Across Six States
Speaking to ANI, Pandher stated that the rail blockade was effectively enforced across six states, marking it as one of their most successful programs since the onset of the protests. Despite the success, he mentioned that the farmer unions would convene a meeting soon to discuss the strategy and roadmap for future actions. The decision-making process will involve input from forums representing the farmers.
Background of Farmer Protests
The farmers have been protesting for nearly a month, presenting demands such as a legal guarantee on MSP, withdrawal of police cases, loan write-offs, pensions for farmers and farm laborers, and no hike in electricity tariffs. The ‘Rail Roko’ protest, organized by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, led to blockades on railway tracks in various locations, including Jalandhar Cantt in Punjab.
Ongoing Struggle and Negotiations
Protesting farmers have maintained their presence at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march was halted on February 13. Despite efforts during talks, where the government offered to buy five crops at MSP for five years, the farmers declined the proposal and continued their protest. The struggle underscores the persistent demands and concerns raised by the farming community.
