Rahul Gandhi Promises Caste-Based Census in Bid for Power
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi made a significant announcement during a public meeting in Kalapipal assembly constituency, Shajapur district, Madhya Pradesh. He declared that if his party comes to power at the Centre, they will prioritize conducting a comprehensive caste-based census to accurately determine the number of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the country.
The Need for Precision: A Caste-Based Census
Gandhi emphasized the importance of having precise data regarding the OBC population. He pointed out that, currently, there is no reliable estimate of their exact numbers. The initiative to conduct a caste-based census, he believes, will address this critical information gap.
A Critique of Governance: Elected Representatives vs. Bureaucracy
During his address, Gandhi offered a critique of the current state of governance in India. He argued that the nation’s affairs were primarily being managed by a select group of 90 officers, including the cabinet secretary and secretaries. According to him, elected Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs) from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had minimal influence in shaping policies and laws.

The Allegation: RSS and Bureaucracy in Control
In a pointed accusation, Gandhi alleged that it is not elected representatives but rather the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and bureaucrats who are formulating laws and policies. This assertion raises questions about the balance of power between elected officials and administrative bodies.
Madhya Pradesh: The “Epicentre” of Corruption
Turning his attention to Madhya Pradesh, Gandhi labeled it as the “epicentre” of corruption in the nation. He referenced high-profile scandals such as Vyapam, where irregularities in various examinations were exposed. Gandhi also mentioned alleged corruption in the construction of the Mahakal Lok corridor and the sale of MBBS degrees, highlighting the pervasive nature of corruption in the state.
Disturbing Statistics: Farmer Suicides
Highlighting the agrarian crisis in Madhya Pradesh, Gandhi shared a distressing statistic. He claimed that over the last 18 years, a staggering 18,000 farmers had tragically taken their own lives. This alarming figure averages to three farmer suicides per day in the state, underscoring the severity of the issue.
