Rahul Gandhi Advocates Nationwide Caste-Based Census Amid Bihar’s Political Turbulence
In the midst of significant political upheaval in Bihar, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi renewed the party’s call for a caste-based census across the nation on Sunday. Following Bihar’s Mahagathbandhan government’s introduction of a groundbreaking caste-based census, a first in India, Rahul Gandhi pledged to extend a similar initiative nationwide if the Congress returns to power at the Centre later this year.
Shift in Dynamics: Nitish Kumar’s Exit and Caste Census Support
Interestingly, the caste-based census was originally championed by Nitish Kumar before his fallout with the grand alliance in the state and the INDIA bloc. Confirming speculations about his split with the Mahagathbandhan and the INDIA bloc, Nitish Kumar resigned as CM on Sunday, paving the way for his ninth term with two deputy CMs from the BJP.
Rahul Gandhi Commends Telangana CM’s Move
Applauding Telangana CM Revanth Reddy’s decision to conduct a caste census in the state, Rahul Gandhi deemed it a “first step towards justice.” Taking to his personal X handle, the Congress MP emphasized the significance of a caste census in understanding the social and economic fabric of society, asserting that it is crucial for equitable participation in the country’s prosperity.
Bihar’s Caste Survey Findings and Political Reactions
After the publication of Bihar’s caste survey results, Bihar deputy CM and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav highlighted that 64% belong to backward classes, while 20% are SC and STs. Nitish Kumar and RJD patriarch Lalu Prasad Yadav termed the release of the caste-based census report as “historic,” while the BJP and other NDA parties criticized it, labeling the exercise and the report as an “eyewash.” The political landscape in Bihar continues to witness significant shifts as the nation awaits further developments.
