Rafah offensive could make humanitarian situation worse: EU top diplomat
The EU’s head of foreign policy Josep Borrell has urged the Israeli government not to proceed with a ground operation in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.
“The European Union is very concerned about Israeli government plans for a possible ground operation in Rafah, where well over a million Palestinians are currently sheltering from the fighting,” Borrell said in a statement.
Borrell said while Israel had the “right to defend itself”, military action in Rafah that would “worsen an already catastrophic humanitarian situation and prevent the urgently needed provision of basic services and humanitarian assistance”.
The Israeli military plans to expand its ground assault into Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, where most Palestinians have been forced to seek shelter amid heavy bombardment of the rest of the enclave.
