Qatar Aims for Gaza Ceasefire Ahead of Ramadan Amid Ongoing Negotiations
Qatar expresses optimism about achieving a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict and is actively pushing for an agreement before the start of Ramadan, according to Majed al-Ansari, the foreign ministry spokesperson. The gas-rich Gulf state, serving as a key mediator, has been engaged in negotiations involving Palestinian militants, Israel, the United States, and Egypt. Al-Ansari stated that while the goal is to reach an agreement before Ramadan, the situation remains fluid on the ground.
US President’s Expectations and Ongoing Negotiations
The spokesperson’s comments followed US President Joe Biden’s statement that a new ceasefire and the release of hostages could commence as early as Monday, anticipating the start of the Muslim holy month around March 11. Qatar emphasizes the importance of a pause in hostilities before Ramadan, acknowledging the challenges but maintaining hope for a resolution. Ongoing negotiations involve various stakeholders, and Qatar remains actively engaged in mediating efforts.
Casualties and Previous Negotiations
The Gaza conflict, marked by Israel’s response to Hamas attacks on October 7, has resulted in significant casualties. The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza reports over 29,878 deaths. Negotiations, including a one-week pause in November, have seen the release of hostages and discussions on a temporary ceasefire. Recent talks in Doha and Paris aim to outline the basic contours of a potential deal, with international mediators involved in facilitating discussions among the parties. The situation continues to unfold, and Qatar remains committed to fostering a conducive environment for peace in the region.
