Punjab Farmers’ Protest Continues; Leaders to Meet Governor
Farmers under the banner of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) are continuing their three-day protest in Punjab, with plans for farmer leaders to meet the Punjab governor on Tuesday to discuss their demands. The ongoing protest, which started on Sunday, has seen scores of farmers gathering at the Mohali-Chandigarh border.
Key Demands of the Protesting Farmers
The farmers are pressing for several demands, including:
- Legal guarantee of the minimum support price (MSP) for crops.
- Withdrawal of cases filed against them during the 2020-21 agitation against the now-repealed farm laws.
- Compensation and job provision for family members of farmers who died during the previous stir.
- Debt waiver and pension for farmers.
Meeting with the Governor and Future Plans
Farmer leader Harmeet Singh Kadian announced that their leaders will present a memorandum to the governor on Tuesday. The SKM, which is a coalition of various farmer unions, will decide their next course of action after this meeting.
Protest Participation and Security Arrangements
Various farmer bodies, including Bharti Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan), BKU (Lakhowal), and BKU (Dakunda), are part of this protest. Heavy security measures are in place, and traffic has been diverted on some roads. Farmers from Haryana have also joined the protest in Panchkula. The protesters have set up tents and a stage for addresses by farmer leaders.
Logistical Preparations and Traffic Advisories
Farmers arrived at the protest site with essential items like ration, bedding, and cooking equipment. The Punjab and Chandigarh Police have enhanced security at the Mohali-Chandigarh border with barricades and water cannons. Traffic advisories have been issued by Chandigarh and Mohali police to manage the disruption caused by the protest.
This protest highlights the ongoing struggles and demands of the farming community in Punjab and their efforts to seek resolution through dialogue and demonstration.
