PTI Announces Nationwide Protest Against Alleged Rigging in Pakistan Elections
Pakistan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by the jailed former prime minister Imran Khan, declared a countrywide protest on Saturday, denouncing the alleged rigging in the February 8 elections that has thwarted their return to power. Secretary General Omar Ayub, addressing a press conference after meeting Imran Khan in Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail, reiterated claims of “large-scale” rigging in the polls and announced that PTI, along with other political parties, would stage protests nationwide.
Accusations of Rigging Prompt PTI’s Countrywide Demonstrations
Omar Ayub, also the party’s candidate for the prime minister’s position, accused the rigging of stealing PTI’s seats and challenged the legitimacy of the election results. He emphasized that the people had given their mandate to the former PTI chairman, Imran Khan. Ayub stated that the PTI would take its protest to courts and assemblies across the country, characterizing their struggle as one for truth.
“Our seats were stolen with just a stroke of pen,” Ayub remarked, expressing the party’s determination to fight against what they perceive as an attack on the nation’s mandate.
Imran Khan Calls for Nationwide Street Protests on March 2
Sher Afzal Marwat, a central leader of PTI, conveyed that Imran Khan desires the nation to join street protests on March 2 to voice their opposition against the alleged rigging in the elections. The PTI’s move indicates a firm stance against what they believe is an unjust electoral process, emphasizing the importance of public mobilization to address their concerns.
