Prime Minister Narendra Modi Commits to Development Initiatives in Lakshadweep
Prime Minister Narendra Modi pledged the Central government’s dedication to bolster the development of Lakshadweep, emphasizing the administration’s efforts to address challenges in health, education, and various other sectors faced by the Union Territory.
Addressing a public gathering in Agatti, PM Modi highlighted the previous neglect the region experienced despite being full of possibilities, citing infrastructural gaps, particularly in the realm of port infrastructure and shipping lifelines.
He underscored recent accomplishments, mentioning the establishment of an ice plant in Agatti that will offer opportunities in seafood processing and enhance income avenues for locals. Additionally, he acknowledged the provision of essential facilities like housing, toilets, electricity, and gas for the underprivileged.
During his visit, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for developmental projects valued at over Rs 1,150 crore in Agatti. Notably, he inaugurated the Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fiber Connection (KLI-SOFC) project to tackle the challenge of slow internet speed in the territory. Further initiatives included the inauguration of the Low-Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD) plant at Kadmat, set to produce 1.5 lakh liters of clean drinking water daily, and the introduction of Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTC) to households in Agatti and Minicoy islands.
The PM also launched the solar power plant in Kavaratti, marking the first battery-backed solar power project in Lakshadweep. Furthermore, he initiated the renovation of the healthcare facility in Kalpeni and laid the groundwork for constructing five model Anganwadi Centres (Nand Ghars) across various islands.
PM Modi’s visit and these development initiatives signify the government’s commitment to uplifting Lakshadweep by addressing longstanding challenges and fostering growth across various sectors in the Union Territory.
