President Murmu Calls for Removing Barriers to Justice
President Droupadi Murmu, speaking at a conference in Delhi, highlighted the significant barriers in the path of equal access to justice, notably the cost and the use of the English language in the higher judiciary. She stressed the importance of removing these obstacles to ensure justice for all. President Murmu underscored the foundational role of equality in justice, and the need for an awareness campaign, especially among rural populations and socially disadvantaged groups, to make them aware of their rights and the availability of legal assistance.
Legal Aid and Language Challenges in Judiciary
President Murmu emphasized the challenges faced by individuals in seeking redressal of grievances due to various factors, with the cost of justice being a primary obstacle. She pointed out the efforts by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) in expanding legal aid and the need to bridge the language divide in the Indian judiciary. The President noted the Supreme Court’s initiative to publish verdicts in regional languages and the role of legal aid institutions in overcoming language barriers.
Technology and Global Collaboration for Justice
Highlighting the promise of technology in democratizing legal aid, President Murmu advocated for an innovative approach to integrate technology in the justice delivery system. She also spoke about the unique challenges faced by the Global South and the importance of international collaboration in addressing these challenges. The President emphasized that access to legal aid is a cornerstone of a modern state and critical in shaping an equitable and just social order. The regional conference, attended by representatives from 69 Africa-Asia-Pacific countries, was seen as a significant step in this collective pursuit of justice and equality.
