PM Modi Prioritizes Eastern India’s Development, Highlights Growth Initiatives
Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the long-overlooked development of Eastern India post-independence, expressing his government’s commitment to making it a growth engine for the country’s development. Addressing a gathering, PM Modi highlighted the substantial increase in Bengal’s railway budget from around Rs 4,000 crore before 2014 to almost Rs 14,000 crore, showcasing unprecedented investment in the region’s connectivity.

PM Modi virtually flagged off the Siliguri-Radhikapur train and inaugurated two road projects exceeding Rs 3,000 crore in North Bengal. These projects aim to alleviate traffic congestion and benefit tourism, industry, and tea farmers in the area. Siliguri is among the 500 stations undergoing renovation under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
“The Central Government is making every possible effort for the development of West Bengal,” PM Modi affirmed, underlining the commitment to comprehensive development in the region.

Highlighting the efforts to enhance rail connectivity, PM Modi noted the commencement of rail connectivity from North Bengal to Bangladesh. The Mithali Express, running from New Jalpaiguri to Dhaka Cantonment, signifies collaborative efforts with the Government of Bangladesh. The extension of connectivity up to Radhikapur station is expected to strengthen the economic ties between the two countries.

PM Modi emphasized North Bengal’s significance as a gateway for trade routes with neighboring countries. The priority of the government over the past decade has been the development of Bengal, especially North Bengal. Completed electrification of rail lines in various places is set to increase train speeds and protect surrounding forests and wildlife from pollution, aligning with the government’s commitment to sustainable development.**
