PM Modi Flags Off India’s First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Connecting Howrah to Kamakhya
Malda Town/Howrah, January 16, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train, establishing a high-speed overnight rail link between Howrah, near Kolkata, and Kamakhya Junction in Guwahati. The state-of-the-art service aims to enhance connectivity between West Bengal and Assam, both of which are currently preparing for upcoming elections.
PM Modi flagged off the new sleeper service from Malda Town, West Bengal, and also virtually launched the return Guwahati–Howrah train from the same location.
“The fully air-conditioned Vande Bharat Sleeper train is designed to provide passengers with an airline-like travel experience at affordable fares,” said a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office. “It will make long-distance journeys faster, safer, and more convenient. The train reduces travel time on the Howrah–Guwahati (Kamakhya) route by around 2.5 hours, while also promoting religious tourism and travel.”
