Revitalizing India’s Legal Landscape
On January 28, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation in the heart of India’s capital during the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the Supreme Court, emphasizing the pivotal role of a robust judicial system in shaping a developed India.
A New Legal Epoch Unfolds
Modi spotlighted the government’s groundbreaking initiative, bidding farewell to three outdated, colonial-era criminal laws. The introduction of Bharatiya Nagrik Surksha Sanhita, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam marks a monumental shift in India’s legal, policing, and investigation systems. This transformative legal overhaul, endorsed during the Winter Session and receiving presidential assent on December 25 of the previous year, propels the nation into a new era of judicial excellence.
Smooth Transition: A Judicial Imperative
Acknowledging the potential challenges of this legal transition, the Prime Minister sought the Supreme Court’s assistance in capacity building for all stakeholders. Stressing the need for a seamless shift to the new laws, Modi underscored the importance of ensuring the uninterrupted flow of justice.
Prime Minister Modi also discussed India’s rising global prominence and the necessity to capitalize on every opportunity. He succinctly outlined the nation’s priorities – ease of living and ease of doing business. The Supreme Court, he asserted, plays a pivotal role in ensuring easy access to justice, contributing significantly to these priorities.
Investing in Justice’s Future
Furthermore, Modi highlighted the Centre’s commitment to fortifying the country’s judicial infrastructure. A substantial allocation of over Rs 7000 crore has been earmarked for court infrastructural improvements, along with an additional Rs 800 crore for the expansion of the Supreme Court complex. This, according to the Prime Minister, is a strategic investment in the future of justice in India.
In conclusion, Prime Minister Modi commended the Supreme Court’s unwavering efforts in upholding the principles of freedom, equality, and justice as enshrined in the Constitution. He affirmed that this commitment has played a pivotal role in fortifying India’s democracy over the past seven decades.
