Passengers Involved in Charter Plane Held in France Opt to Stay Despite Departure for Mumbai
Approximately two dozen passengers, including 20 adults and five minors, remained onboard the charter plane that departed for Mumbai from France following legal clearance.
These individuals sought asylum in France, while two others, suspected of involvement in trafficking, were issued expulsion orders.
Asylum seekers, safeguarded under international law, cannot be repatriated to their country of origin.
Reports indicate that those suspected of trafficking were eventually released after authorities were satisfied they had voluntarily boarded the flight.
The aircraft, affiliated with Romania’s Legend Airlines, arrived in Mumbai with 276 passengers after obtaining approval from a French judge. The composition of nationalities among these passengers, notably how many were Indian, remains undisclosed.
Initially destined for Nicaragua, the Airbus A340, carrying mostly Indian passengers, was detained at Vatry Airport in Paris due to suspicions of human trafficking.
Current reports suggest that French authorities are now focusing on potential violations of immigration laws rather than human trafficking.
Nicaragua is a common transit point for immigrants attempting illegal entry into the US. Data from the US Customs and Border Patrol highlights a significant surge in Indians’ illegal attempts to enter the US, with a substantial portion aiming to cross the Mexican border.
Flights targeting Nicaragua or destinations facilitating easy access to travel documents are colloquially known as ‘donkey’ flights, a term associated with migration facilitation.
