Over 500 Detained in Delhi as Protests Demand CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s Resignation Over SIR Row

NEW DELHI, Oct 2, 2026 [VoM News]: More than 500 detained in Delhi amid protests for CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over SIR row Can you believe more than 500 people were detained in Delhi recently? Delhi was shaken up on Friday as opposition parties and student groups led a protest to oppose the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. Guess why they are demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar?

AAP leaders Atishi and Saurabh Bharadwaj were trapped in the scuffle near Jantar Mantar.

The protestors had earlier been denied permission for the demonstration by the police and the New Delhi district was put on a leash. Protestors argued against irregularities in the SIR process and questioned the removal of names from voter lists. But what is the Election Commission arguing? They have strongly denied any allegations and have claimed that differences of opinion among election commissioners are common in serious discussions.

And, meanwhile, in Mumbai, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) held their own protest at Shivaji Park demanding Kumar’s resignation.

Even after police denied them permission, founder Abhijeet Dipke carried on with the demonstration. Actors Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi and singer Vishal Dadlani also participated in the protest.
