Opposition Alliance Pushes for VVPAT Reforms, Cites Integrity Doubts in EVMs
The opposition INDIA bloc, comprising leaders from 28 opposition parties, has expressed concerns about the integrity of electronic voting machines (EVMs) and proposed reforms regarding Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) slips during elections.
During their recent meeting, the opposition alliance highlighted the lack of confidence in the functioning of EVMs, echoing concerns raised by experts and professionals.
To address these doubts, they proposed a revised system: after casting their votes, voters should receive the VVPAT slip confirming their choice. Subsequently, voters would place these slips into a separate ballot box.
The resolution urged for the subsequent 100% counting of these VVPAT slips to ensure transparency and regain public trust in the electoral process.
The opposition leaders emphasized the necessity for this change, especially in light of recent victories by the ruling BJP in state assembly elections.
The alliance aims to unite on this issue and bring it to the forefront of public attention.
Currently, the Election Commission mandates the verification of VVPAT slips from five randomly selected polling stations per assembly constituency before declaring election results in House of the People elections.
The opposition’s stance highlights their firm belief that implementing reforms in handling VVPAT slips would enhance transparency, strengthen electoral integrity, and restore confidence in the electoral process among citizens.
