OnePlus 12R Unveiled: Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Sleek Design, and Impressive Display Shine in Initial Impressions
The OnePlus 12R made its debut alongside the flagship OnePlus 12 during the Smooth Beyond Belief event in New Delhi, India. While it may not boast the exact top-tier specifications as its larger counterpart, it still stands out as a formidable device. Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, a flagship chipset from the previous year, the OnePlus 12R bears a resemblance to the OnePlus 11R in design, which is a positive note. Having spent some time with the new OnePlus 12R, let’s delve into my initial impressions.
Straight out of the box, the OnePlus 12R offers a pleasant feel to the touch, courtesy of its slightly curved back and front. The phone features a metal frame with slim bezels encompassing the front. The iconic Alert Slider has been relocated to its original position from the OnePlus 2 era, while the power and volume buttons reside on the right edge. At the bottom, you’ll find a USB Type-C port, speaker, microphone, and SIM card slot, with an IR blaster, a second microphone, and an additional speaker at the top. The device is available in iron grey and cool blue colors, with the latter being susceptible to fingerprints. Opting for the grey variant with a matte finish might be a better choice to keep fingerprints at bay, or using a case for the beautiful rear panel.
The front of the OnePlus 12R boasts a sizable 6.78-inch fourth-generation AMOLED LTPO panel, dubbed ProXDR by the company. Surrounded by slim bezels, the display houses an in-display fingerprint scanner and offers features like adaptive 1-120Hz refresh rate, 1.5K resolution, up to 1000 Hz touch response rate, Dolby Vision, HDR 10+, and an impressive brightness of 1,600 nits (4,500 nits peak). The display is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and comes with an interesting rain-resistant feature, earning it an IP64 rating.
Turning our attention to the rear, the OnePlus 12R presents a familiar camera module reminiscent of the OnePlus 11 series. The module, though large, adds a distinctive touch to the phone’s design. Equipped with a triple rear camera setup, including a 50-megapixel Sony IMX890 primary sensor with OIS and PDAF, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide unit with a 122-degree FoV, and a 2-megapixel Macro sensor, the phone promises versatile photography capabilities. The front houses a 16-megapixel sensor. While I will conduct a thorough camera test in my full review, the initial impressions suggest that the primary camera performs well in daylight.
The OnePlus 12R offers two variants in India, with options for 8GB RAM + 128GB storage or 16GB RAM and 256GB storage. Both variants feature fast LPDDR5X RAM, with only the 256GB variant boasting the faster UFS 4.0 storage. Connectivity options include Bluetooth 5.3, dual-band Wi-Fi 7, NFC, an IR blaster, and standard GPS features. Stay tuned for a comprehensive review to assess the overall performance and capabilities of the OnePlus 12R.
