OnePlus 12R Unveiled: A Powerful Contender with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, Impressive Design, and Competitive Pricing
The introduction of the OnePlus 12R took place at the Smooth Beyond Belief event in New Delhi, India, alongside its flagship counterpart, the OnePlus 12. While it may not boast identical top-tier specifications as the larger OnePlus 12, the 12R proves to be a formidable device. Equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, a flagship processor from the previous year, it bears a resemblance to the OnePlus 11R in terms of design. Having had the opportunity to use the new OnePlus 12R, I’d like to share my initial impressions.
Right out of the box, the OnePlus 12R offers a comfortable grip, thanks to its slightly curved back and front. The phone sports a metal frame with slim bezels encompassing the front display. The iconic Alert Slider has found a new position, returning to its original placement when first introduced with the OnePlus 2. The power and volume buttons reside on the right edge, while the bottom features a USB Type-C port, speaker, microphone, and SIM card slot. At the top, you’ll find an IR blaster, a second microphone, and another speaker. The phone is available in Iron Grey and Cool Blue colors, with the Cool Blue variant displaying a propensity for fingerprints. The Gray variant, with its matte finish, may be more resistant to fingerprints, but using a case remains an option to preserve the phone’s sleek rear panel.
On the front, the OnePlus 12R boasts a generous 6.78-inch fourth-generation AMOLED LTPO panel dubbed ProXDR by the company. The display features slim bezels and incorporates an in-display fingerprint scanner. Offering an adaptive 1-120Hz refresh rate, 1.5K resolution, up to 1000 Hz touch response rate, Dolby Vision, HDR 10+, and an impressive brightness of 1,600 nits (4,500 nits peak), the display is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus 2. Additionally, the phone has an IP64 rating, allowing usage even in the rain.
Turning to the rear, the OnePlus 12R showcases a recognizable camera module reminiscent of the OnePlus 11 series. While the module adds a distinctive design, it results in a slight wobble when the phone is laid on its back. The triple rear camera setup includes a 50-megapixel Sony IMX890 primary sensor with OIS and PDAF, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide unit with a 122-degree FoV, and a 2-megapixel Macro sensor. Initial impressions of the primary camera suggest excellent performance in daylight. On the front, there’s a 16-megapixel sensor, and a comprehensive camera review will follow.
In India, the OnePlus 12R is available in two variants: 8GB RAM + 128GB storage or 16GB RAM and 256GB storage. Both variants feature fast LPDDR5X RAM, while only the 256GB variant gets the speedier UFS 4.0 storage. Connectivity options include Bluetooth 5.3, dual-band Wi-Fi 7, NFC, an IR blaster, and standard GPS. With a substantial 5,500mAh battery and a 100W charger included, the phone lacks wireless charging, a feature reserved for the OnePlus 12. The device runs on Android 14-based OxygenOS 14.0, offering minimal bloatware and numerous OnePlus-exclusive customization options. Notably, it doesn’t incorporate advanced AI features seen in some competing models.
In my brief experience with the OnePlus 12R, I found it to be impressive. Packed with features that nearly match flagship standards, and with a starting price of Rs. 39,999, it appears to be a compelling option. However, a more in-depth review will be necessary to provide a comprehensive assessment. For those contemplating the OnePlus 12R against its competitors, stay tuned for my full review to make an informed decision.
