Omar Abdullah Criticizes BJP for Strained J&K Bond Post Article 370 Abrogation
In a sharp rebuke, National Conference Vice-President Omar Abdullah asserted on Wednesday that the BJP government’s decision to abrogate Article 370 provisions has damaged the longstanding bond between Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of the country. Responding to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks in Parliament, Abdullah highlighted the discontent among the people of the region regarding the revocation of the special status.
Harm to Bond and Unhappiness Among Residents
Abdullah emphasized that the connection between Jammu and Kashmir and the nation was not merely between individuals but represented a link between the entire country and the state. He expressed dissatisfaction, stating that the decisions made on August 5, 2019, had not resonated well with the people in Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh. Abdullah predicted that this discontent would manifest in the forthcoming assembly elections.
Delay in Elections and Concerns for Jammu and Kashmir’s Future
The delay in holding Assembly elections in the Union territory was criticized by Abdullah, who argued that it was leading Jammu and Kashmir towards a destructive path. He expressed concern over the denial of the right to vote since 2014, labeling the situation as a peculiar kind of fixed match. The political leader highlighted the need for resolving the Election Commission-government consultation deadlock.
