Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced her decision not to contest the Lok Sabha elections after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suggested she run from Tamil Nadu or Andhra Pradesh. Citing financial constraints and concerns over winnability criteria, Sitharaman declined the offer, stating that her earnings are personal and not from public funds.

Sitharaman’s Political Journey and Contributions

Nirmala Sitharaman, former Union Defence Minister, has played significant roles in various ministries, including Finance, Commerce, and Industry. As Defence Minister, she expedited defence procurement decisions and established a Defence Planning Committee to address national security challenges. Sitharaman, born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, joined BJP in 2008 and has served as a national spokesperson since 2010.

BJP’s Candidate Lineup for Lok Sabha Elections

The BJP released its initial list of 195 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi contesting from Varanasi. Notable candidates include Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Jyotiraditya Scindia, who recently joined BJP, will contest from Guna in Madhya Pradesh.
