NIA Adds Two More Accused in ISIS-inspired Coimbatore Car Bomb Blast Case

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken a significant step in the ISIS-inspired Coimbatore car bomb blast case of 2022 by filing a supplementary chargesheet. This fresh development targets the conspiracy, which aimed at impacting various branches including general administration, police, and judiciary. Mohammed Azarudeen alias Azar and Mohammed Idris, both residents of Coimbatore, are named in the supplementary chargesheet and face charges under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and the Explosive Substances Act.

Growing Accusations: Two More Join the Ranks of Chargesheeted Individuals

With the inclusion of Azarudeen and Idris, the total number of accused in this case has reached 13. The NIA had previously chargesheeted 11 individuals on two separate occasions – on April 20 and June 2 of the previous year. The charges stem from an explosion near the ancient Arulmigu Kottai Sangameshwarar Thirukovil Temple in Ukkadam, Coimbatore, on October 23, 2022.

Unraveling the Conspiracy: NIA’s Probe into Suicidal Terror Attacks

The NIA, taking up the investigation on October 27, 2022, uncovered a plot orchestrated by individuals like Jamesha Mubeen, Mohammed Azarudeen, Umar Faaruq, Sheikh Hidayathullah, and Sanofer Ali. The group conspired to carry out a series of suicidal terror attacks in Coimbatore following a plan devised in the forested area of Sathyamangalam region in Erode district, Tamil Nadu. The intended targets included various branches of society such as general administration, police, and judiciary. The underlying motivation, as indicated in self-made confessional videos, was to wreak vengeance on non-believers. Azarudeen’s role as a pedagogue and his previous involvement in indoctrination for ISIS ideology and connection to the NTJ module of Sri Lanka have added complexity to the case. The unfolding events highlight the NIA’s ongoing efforts to unravel and address the intricate threads of this terror conspiracy.
