NHAI Suspends Tunnel Construction in J-k Amid Cracks
According to a report by The Indian Express, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has temporarily halted construction on a tunnel in the Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir due to the emergence of cracks inside the structure.
The tunnel, intended to provide an alternative route through the landslide-prone areas of Mehar in the district, as well as to shorten the distance between Jammu and Srinagar, has faced increasing pressure over the past few days, leading to the development of cracks.
A senior NHAI official, in conversation with The Indian Express, stated that as a precautionary measure, the work on the tunnel has been suspended. The official mentioned that engineers are currently assessing the situation, and all personnel and equipment have been evacuated from within the tunnel.

Construction on the Mehar tunnel commenced approximately one-and-a-half years ago, simultaneously at two portals (P1 and P2). This tunnel is part of a larger project involving the construction of three tunnels, each ranging from 400 to 800 meters in length.
The overall initiative aims to realign the national highway between Ramban and Banihal, providing a safer route that avoids stretches prone to landslides.
