Multiple Earthquakes Strike Nepal and Reverberate Across Northern India

Delhi, the bustling capital city of India, and its neighboring regions experienced a series of powerful earthquakes on Tuesday, creating moments of panic and concern among residents. The seismic events were triggered by multiple temblors that rattled Nepal, sending shockwaves through northern India.

Multiple Earthquakes Strike Nepal and Reverberate Across Northern India

Within a span of 25 minutes, Nepal was jolted by two significant earthquakes, measuring 4.6 and 6.2 on the Richter scale, respectively. This seismic activity continued with a third quake of 3.8 magnitude just 15 minutes later, followed by a fourth of 3.1 magnitude 13 minutes after that, all occurring at 3:19 PM IST. The initial earthquake struck Nepal at 2:25 PM IST. Furthermore, the National Centre for Seismology reported a 5.2 magnitude earthquake in Arunachal Pradesh at 3:27 PM IST, and a 3.3 magnitude disturbance in Uttarakhand shortly thereafter.

    Epicenters and Twitter Updates

The epicenter of the most powerful earthquake was located 206 km southeast of Joshimath in Uttarakhand and 284 km north of Lucknow. X, formerly known as Twitter, witnessed updates from the National Centre for Seismology, providing vital information about the earthquakes. One tweet read, “Earthquake of Magnitude: 6.2, Occurred on 03-10-2023, 14:51:04 IST, Lat: 29.39 & Long: 81.23, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Nepal.” These tremors were felt not only in Delhi but also in other parts of the National Capital Region (NCR). Panic ensued, with people evacuating office buildings and sharing videos of the chaos on social media. Delhi Police issued a statement, urging residents to seek safety but remain calm, emphasizing, “DO NOT USE ELEVATORS! For any emergency help, dial 112.”

    Tremors Across Northern India

Reports confirmed that tremors were felt in various regions of Uttar Pradesh, including Lucknow, Hapur, and Amroha. Parts of Uttarakhand also experienced tremors in the aftermath of the Nepal earthquakes. The seismic waves even reached as far as Chandigarh and Jaipur, causing alarm among residents. Fortunately, there have been no reports of damage, injuries, or fatalities from Nepal thus far.

    Vulnerability of Nepal to Earthquakes

Nepal finds itself situated within one of the world’s most active tectonic zones, specifically in Seismic Zone IV and V. This geographical location renders the country highly susceptible to earthquakes. A stark reminder of this vulnerability was the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck in April 2015, claiming over 8,000 lives and leaving more than 21,000 people injured.
