MP Derek O’Brien Demand for Supreme Court-Monitored Lok Sabha Polls
Trinamool Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien raised concerns over the integrity of the Election Commission of India (ECI), alleging BJP’s interference. O’Brien demanded Supreme Court-monitored Lok Sabha polls, expressing apprehension about BJP’s tactics undermining democratic processes.
Accusations of BJP Manipulation Ahead of Elections
O’Brien accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of manipulating the electoral landscape to its advantage before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. He criticized the BJP for allegedly transforming the ECI into a tool to target opposition parties, questioning whether it functions as an impartial body or a BJP ally.
TMC Criticism Echoed by Spokesperson Kunal Ghosh
Echoing O’Brien’s sentiments, TMC Spokesperson Kunal Ghosh lambasted the Union Government for its alleged attempt to influence various organizations, including the ECI. Ghosh highlighted the replacement of West Bengal’s DGP Rajeev Kumar as another instance of BJP’s interference in state affairs.
ECI’s Decisive Action Ahead of Lok Sabha Elections
The ECI’s decision to replace DGP Rajeev Kumar with IPS Officer Vivek Sahay in West Bengal, along with the removal of Home Secretaries in six states, has sparked controversy. The ECI justified these actions as necessary steps to ensure transparency, fairness, and freedom in the electoral process.
As West Bengal gears up for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls scheduled in seven phases starting April 19, the political landscape remains tense. In the 2019 elections, TMC emerged victorious with a significant vote share, closely followed by BJP. The ongoing political turmoil underscores the high stakes involved in the upcoming electoral battle.
