Mizoram Polls See Over 10,500 People Vote Through Home Voting and Postal Ballots
A total of 10,585 senior citizens, people with disabilities (PwDs), and government officials exercised their right to vote ahead of the November 7 Mizoram Assembly elections through home voting and postal ballots, according to the additional chief electoral officer H Lianzela. Among them, 2,059 senior citizens aged 80 and above, as well as PwDs, cast their votes through home voting, while 8,526 government officials, including security and polling personnel, voted using postal ballots. The city of Aizawl led in both home and postal voting, with a total of 2,534 voters exercising their franchise, followed by Lawngtlai with 1,614 voters and Lunglei with 1,582.
High Stakes in the Mizoram Polls
The forthcoming Mizoram elections, scheduled for November 7, have multiple candidates vying for the 40 seats. Major political parties, including the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), main opposition party Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), and Congress, have fielded candidates for all 40 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have entered the race with 23 and 4 candidates, respectively, while 27 independent candidates are also in contention. The outcome of these elections will be determined by over 8.57 lakh eligible voters, including 4,39,026 women, who will choose from the 174 candidates in the fray.
Remote Polling Stations Prepared for Election Day
Out of the 1,276 voting centers in Mizoram, 149 are remote polling stations. Election officials assigned to these polling stations began their journey to their designated areas. With the conclusion of the election campaign at 4 pm, the state is now gearing up for the highly anticipated assembly elections on November 7.
