Mehraj Malik Quits NC Alliance, Slams Successive Governments for Stalling J&K’s Progress
Doda, Jammu & Kashmir – June 15, 2025: In a bold political move that has stirred fresh debate in Jammu & Kashmir’s political landscape, Doda MLA Mehraj Malik announced his withdrawal of support from the National Conference (NC)-led coalition government, accusing the administration of failing to serve the public interest.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Malik issued a statement that underscored his growing disillusionment with the coalition:
“I, Mehraj Malik, MLA from Doda, hereby withdraw my support to NC in the government coalition. This decision has been taken in the best interest of my people of Jammu and Kashmir, whose trust and welfare will always be my top priority.”
Known for his firebrand oratory, Malik has been a vocal critic of both the BJP and PDP, alleging that successive governments have “crippled” the state through mismanagement and hollow promises. His outspokenness in the Assembly has frequently sparked controversy — most recently, he was allegedly manhandled by BJP lawmakers and PDP workers in the House lobby after delivering scathing remarks against the saffron party and late PDP founder Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.
Malik also questioned why, despite being a Union Territory, Jammu & Kashmir continues to face roadblocks in executing even basic public welfare projects. He contrasted the region’s stagnation with Delhi’s development trajectory under Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

“If Kejriwal could overhaul Delhi’s education, health, and infrastructure systems within a Union Territory setup, why has the NC-led government under Omar Abdullah failed to bring about any meaningful change in J&K?” he remarked during a recent public address.
While Malik’s withdrawal does not impact the ruling coalition’s majority—which remains stable with 52 supporting MLAs—it poses a new strategic and narrative challenge for the government. As a prominent independent voice, Malik’s presence in the Assembly is expected to keep pressure mounting on the coalition, especially on matters of public accountability.
Observers suggest that Malik’s latest move may signal a broader shift in regional politics, with independent legislators asserting themselves more forcefully against traditional party lines.
