In a momentous achievement, Manu Bhaker has become the first Indian woman shooter to win an Olympic medal, securing a bronze in the 10m air pistol event at the Paris Olympics on Sunday.
This victory marks the end of a 12-year wait for India’s shooting team, with the last medals being won at the 2012 London Olympics by Vijay Kumar and Gagan Narang, who is currently the chef de mission of the Paris contingent.
The 22-year-old Bhaker, hailing from Jhajjar in Haryana, displayed immense resilience to clinch the bronze with a score of 221.7. Korea’s Kim Yeji took silver with a score of 241.3, while Jin Ye Oh won gold with a Games record of 243.2.
Competing in her second Olympics, Bhaker redeemed herself after a disappointing campaign in Tokyo, where a pistol malfunction cost her a place in the finals.
“After Tokyo, I was very disappointed and it took me a very long time to overcome that. Frankly speaking, I really can’t explain how good I am feeling today,” Bhaker said, smiling widely after her win.
“I was fighting with all the energy I have. Really grateful that I could win the bronze. I read Bhagwat Gita and always tried to do what I am supposed to do, leaving everything else to god. We can’t fight destiny,” added Bhaker, who is also a world champion in the 25m pistol event.
Sunday’s triumph not only brought Bhaker personal redemption but also delivered a historic milestone for Indian shooting, demonstrating her unwavering determination and remarkable skill.
Speaking on Jio Cinema after her victory, Bhaker expressed her relief and joy, having finally overcome the shadows of her Tokyo disappointment.
