A 40-year-old man suffered injuries after being attacked by a wild bear in the Watshan Manigam area of Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Sunday.
The victim, identified as Bashir Ahmad Chopan, son of the late Gh Mohammad Chopan from Chopan Mohalla Manigam, was assaulted by the bear in the early hours of the day.
According to an official statement, Chopan was immediately rushed to the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Manigam for initial medical attention.
However, due to the severity of his injuries, he was later referred to the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in Soura for advanced treatment.
The incident has raised alarm among the local population, as bear attacks in the region have been a cause for concern. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions when venturing into areas known for wildlife presence.
Wildlife officials have been notified about the attack and efforts are underway to track and possibly relocate the bear to prevent further incidents.
The local administration is also coordinating with wildlife experts to devise strategies to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts in the region.
Bashir Ahmad Chopan is currently receiving treatment at SKIMS Soura, and his condition is being closely monitored by medical professionals. The community has expressed their support and prayers for his speedy recovery.
This incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by residents in rural areas of Kashmir, where human-wildlife interactions can sometimes lead to dangerous encounters.
