Make the Road States Reacts to the Release of Mayor Ras Baraka Following Arrest at Delaney Hall ICE Facility
Calls for transparency have been met with silence, resistance, and arrests.
(Newark, New Jersey) – Following the reopening of the Delaney ICE detention facility in Newark, New Jersey, advocates, local leaders and politicians have repeatedly called for needed oversight and accountability. Delaney Hall has a history of abuses and was reopened by ICE without permission from the city and in defiance of city ordinances.
In a stunning escalation, ICE and Homeland Security today denied members of Congress access to the facility and arrested Newark Mayor Ras Baraka. After hours of detainment, Mayor Baraka was released.
Following his release, Nedia Morsy, Executive Director of Make the Road New Jersey, issued the following statement:
“The arrest of Mayor Baraka is shameful and should’ve never happened. This was a result of the Trump administration allowing ICE and Homeland Security have unchecked authority to storm into our neighborhoods and terrorize our communities and families. If ICE believes they can reopen a dangerous facility without having to answer to anyone, they are mistaken. No government agency should operate without oversight or accountability. Make the Road New Jersey has been at Delaney Hall demanding accountability since day one and we will continue to fight back against any attempts to make New Jersey a mass deportation zone.”

Theo Oshiro, Co-Executive Director for Make the Road States, added:
“Immigrants across the country have suffered traumatic conditions when they are placed in these for-profit, private detention facilities. Millions of taxpayers dollars are funneled to these facilities every year so they must be accountable to the public. We stand with the New Jersey community fighting to make our communities safer and are glad to see the release of Mayor Ras Baraka.”
