LIVE Updates: Russia and China Condemn US‑Israeli Attacks on Iran, Call for Ceasefire
BEIJING/MOSCOW — The foreign ministers of Russia and China have strongly criticised the United States and Israel over their military strikes on Iran, urging an immediate halt to hostilities and pressing for diplomatic solutions amid widening regional tensions.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his Israeli counterpart on Tuesday that Beijing opposes the military strikes launched by the United States and Israel against Iran and demanded that they end immediately. Wang said force does not solve problems and warned that continued military action risks “serious long‑term consequences.” China reiterated its belief that regional issues should be resolved through dialogue and negotiation.
Wang’s comments came on the heels of phone consultations with Russia’s Sergey Lavrov, as well as discussions with foreign ministers from Iran, Oman and France, in which China urged Gulf nations to oppose external interference.
In Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov echoed Beijing’s concern, saying the U.S.‑Israeli campaign against Iran lacks clear goals and could inadvertently deepen regional insecurity. Lavrov said there is currently no evidence that Tehran was pursuing nuclear weapons — a central justification cited by Washington and Jerusalem for the strikes — and called for hostilities to stop.
Lavrov also warned that the conflict could spur further nuclear proliferation in the Middle East by convincing other nations that nuclear capabilities are the only reliable deterrent. He said the strikes have undermined stability and stressed the importance of finding a diplomatic resolution.
Both China and Russia have boosted diplomatic efforts at the United Nations, including supporting emergency meetings to discuss rising violence and its broader implications for international peace and security. Their criticism underscores growing global concern over the widening conflict following U.S. and Israeli military action against Iran.
China, a longstanding partner of Tehran, has urged respect for sovereignty and reiterated opposition to military action without UN approval, while Russia has stressed that escalating warfare could ignite a broader crisis involving nuclear proliferation and regional arms races.
