Lionel Messi Retires From International Competition After Argentina’s Runner-Up Finish at 2026 FIFA World Cup

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA – September 1 [VoM News]: Argentina captain Lionel Messi announced his departure from international football on Monday, August 31 following the side’s second consecutive appearance in a FIFA World Cup final in July 2026.

In a post on Instagram, the 39-year-old Argentine declared the choice to be a difficult one, but felt it necessary for the good of international play in the country.

The 39-year-old said he consistently put his nation first when it came to playing for the Argentinian national squad – not just now, but throughout his time playing for them.

He said it had always been an honor and a pride to wear the Argentinian colors and do everything possible to fight and play his best for them each and every match.

Messi’s first major silverware as an international player came on 18 December 2022 when Argentina beat France on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw in the final of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. This would be their first FIFA World Cup title since they triumphed at the 1986 FIFA World Cup, thanks to Messi’s seven goals as he picked up the Golden Ball.

In 2026 Argentina’s consecutive final appearance could not bring back a second trophy as Spain narrowly won 1-0.

The retirement would now signify the conclusion of the decorated Argentinian.
