Leh Apex Body Calls for Hunger Strike in Solidarity with Sonam Wangchuk
The Leh Apex Body has urged the people of Ladakh to participate in a hunger strike on October 13 in support of Sonam Wangchuk and his team, who have been on hunger strike for the past ten days at Delhi’s Ladakh Bhavan.
Ladakh is demanding the implementation of a four-point agenda that includes:
- Inclusion of Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
- Granting of statehood.
- Establishment of a public service commission.
- Provision for separate Lok Sabha seats for the Leh and Kargil districts.
Tsering Dorjey Lakruk, Chairman of the Leh Apex Body, addressed a press conference in Leh, expressing concern over the health of those on hunger strike in Delhi. He highlighted that Ladakh has been enduring challenging times, while the government in New Delhi seems oblivious to their struggles.
Lakruk called on the people to join the hunger strike to exert pressure on the Indian government to resume dialogue regarding their demands.
Sonam Wangchuk, a prominent climate activist, initiated his indefinite hunger strike along with supporters, demanding that the Centre recommence discussions on their concerns. So far, no government representatives have approached the protesters.
Wangchuk emphasized that the people of Ladakh have contributed to India’s security without any formal recognition or compensation and deserve to be heard.
The Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance have been leading the agitation for Ladakh’s Sixth Schedule status and statehood for the past four years.
