LegalShield’s March CSLI Reveals Insights into Election Trends in Swing States

LegalShield releases its March Consumer Legal Stress Index (CSLI). The data suggests that when ‘swing state’ consumer stress, as measured by more than 150,000 consumer legal inquiries fielded each month, dips below national stress average in October and November, conditions favor a Democratic win.

For the first time, LegalShield broke out consumer stress levels on a politically geographic basis, separating red, blue, and purple swing states. For the purposes of the current data view, LegalShield classified states based on the outcome of the 2020 election. Swing states in March’s study are Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Key findings include:

  1. Relationship Between Household Legal Stress and Election Outcome: LegalShield’s data indicates a consistent pattern observed over the past five presidential election cycles. When consumer stress in swing states dips below the national average in the months leading up to the election, conditions tend to favor a Democratic win. Conversely, when stress levels in swing states surpass the national average, a Republican victory is more likely.
  2. March Divergence: Our data for March highlights a divergence in consumer stress levels between blue, red, and purple states. While stress levels rose in blue states, they fell in red and purple states. This shift is particularly significant as it could impact voter sentiments and preferences in key battleground states.
  3. National CSLI Decline: The overall Consumer Stress Legal Index experienced a notable decline, reaching its lowest level in 12 months. This decrease reflects positive macroeconomic indicators but also underscores ongoing challenges faced by consumers, including issues related to bankruptcy, consumer finance, and foreclosure.

LegalShield’s CSLI tracks consumer actions as opposed to polling data or sentiment surveys, providing a unique view of the economic experience in red, blue and purple states. Would you be interested in setting an interview with Matt Layton, LegalShield SVP of consumer analytics?
