Landslide in Meghalaya Claims Lives of Four Family Members, Including Minors
A heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded in Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills as a massive landslide struck the Pynthorlangtein area, burying alive four members of a family, including two minors. The devastating incident occurred on Sunday, reportedly triggered by incessant rainfall, causing a house to collapse under the weight of the landslide.
Efforts to Rescue and Recover
Local authorities and police were alerted to the incident by residents of the area. A rescue operation was swiftly initiated, with police personnel working tirelessly to retrieve the victims from the debris. Despite their best efforts, the family members could not be saved.
Ex-Gratia Fund and Condolences
Meghalaya’s Director General of Police (DGP), Dr. LR Bishnoi, confirmed the tragic loss of four lives in the landslide incident. He also stated that the state government had released an ex-gratia fund for the next of kin of the deceased individuals.
Local MLA Wailadmiki Shylla expressed heartfelt condolences to the grieving family. In a statement, Shylla mourned the tragic loss and praised the responsible citizens who alerted authorities and attempted to assist the family during the challenging circumstances. Shylla emphasized the importance of vigilance, regular inspections of surroundings, and the prompt reporting of potential dangers to authorities.
This tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the devastating impact of natural disasters and the importance of preparedness and community support during times of crisis.
