The Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh has constituted a panel to evaluate the formation of five new districts. This committee will review aspects related to establishing new districts, including their boundaries, headquarters, and administrative structures. The five proposed districts are Sham, Nubra, Changthang, Zanskar, and Drass.
The panel has been formed following an in-principle approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. According to the General Administration Department of Ladakh, the committee will assess various parameters necessary for the creation of these districts.
This includes determining the headquarters, defining the boundaries, and considering the creation of administrative posts.
The committee is chaired by retired IAS officer Pramod Kumar Jain, while two other retired IAS officers, Kacho Asfandyar Khan and Tsering Angchok, serve as members. Additionally, the Deputy Commissioners of Leh and Kargil districts are appointed as ex-officio members of the committee.
The panel is tasked with submitting its findings and recommendations within three months. This initiative is part of a larger effort to improve administrative efficiency and address the unique geographical challenges of the region.
The creation of new districts is expected to enhance governance and bring public services closer to remote areas of Ladakh.
Residents of the proposed districts are hopeful that this move will lead to better infrastructure, healthcare, and education services. The final decision on the formation of these districts will be based on the panel’s recommendations.
