Kuki-Zo Tribal Delegation to Discuss Manipur Situation with Home Minister Amit Shah
A delegation of Kuki-Zo tribal organizations from Manipur is set to meet Home Minister Amit Shah and officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in Delhi this week to discuss the current situation in the northeastern state. Comprising leaders of various tribal organizations, the delegation aims to address the prevailing law and order situation, particularly focusing on the ethnic unrest that began in May 2023. The delegation is expected to discuss measures to restore peace and well-being in the region, where over 200 people have lost their lives due to ongoing violence. The meeting with MHA officials is scheduled for Tuesday or Wednesday.
Manipur Chief Minister’s Recent Meeting with Amit Shah
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh had met Home Minister Amit Shah on February 3, discussing “matters of paramount importance” concerning Manipur. Singh expressed optimism that the Centre would make significant decisions in the interest of the state’s people. The ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur originated from tensions between Kuki-Zo tribes and Meiteis over the latter’s demand for Scheduled Tribes status, leading to a series of confidence-building measures and peace efforts by the government.
Note: The situation in Manipur continues to be a matter of concern, and efforts are underway to address the underlying issues contributing to the unrest.
