Kerala Records 300 New COVID-19 Cases and 3 Fatalities: Health Expert Stresses Disease’s Resilience
Kerala reported 300 fresh active cases of COVID-19 along with three deaths on December 20, according to data provided by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The state’s total active cases amounted to 2,669. A health expert based in Kerala emphasized that COVID-19, akin to other communicable diseases, cannot be entirely eradicated but has shown reduced impact.
Dr. Sreejith N Kumar asserted, “Covid is just like any other communicable disease that cannot be wiped out completely. However, the strike rate of the disease has come down, and the mortality rate is not as high as it used to be. It is now just like any other influenza or common cold,” reported ANI.
Addressing concerns over the virus’s resurgence, Union Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya chaired a high-level meeting to assess India’s COVID-19 situation. Given the recent rise in cases in certain states, Mandaviya stressed the necessity for vigilance and readiness against new strains of the virus. “It is important to be alert and prepared against new and emerging strains of the COVID-19 virus,” he emphasized.
Mandaviya urged states to bolster surveillance, maintain sufficient medical supplies including medicines, oxygen cylinders, ventilators, and vaccines. Emphasizing collaboration between the Centre and States, he proposed periodic mock drills at both levels to share best practices and enhance efficiency in managing COVID-19.
Amid the surge in respiratory diseases and the emergence of the JN.1 COVID sub-variant, the World Health Organization (WHO) highlighted the virus’s evolving nature. The WHO encouraged member states to maintain robust surveillance and continue sharing genetic sequences to monitor the virus’s changes effectively.
