
Kashmiri Artisan Mir Arshad Hussain Wins Global Prize in Iran
Mir Arshad Hussain, a noted papier mâché craftsman from Bota Kadal, Lal Bazar, has been awarded the first prize and Diploma of Honour at the 9th International Fajr Festival of Handicrafts, Sarv-e-Simin, in Tehran. The award was presented by Iran’s Minister for Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts, Seyed Reza Salehi Amiri.
Mir Arshad’s winning entry, a papier mâché wall plate blending traditional and contemporary motifs of Kashmir, triumphed over 7,000 global submissions. Alongside the prestigious title, he received a cash award of Rs 65,000.

The festival brought together master artisans and renowned designers from across the world, setting the highest standards of craftsmanship and originality. One of the most notable aspects of the award was a special mention from the Iranian Culture Minister, who praised Mir Arshad’s dedication and innovation in elevating handicrafts. “Your creations through your masterful hands stand as a testament to skill, passion, and dedication to the cultural and artistic legacy of the world,” the citation read.
Director of Handicrafts and Handloom Kashmir, Mussarat Islam, congratulated Mir Arshad on this rare honour, expressing hope that his international recognition would inspire others to take Kashmir’s famed handicrafts to greater heights.
An IT engineer by qualification and a master craftsman by choice, Mir Arshad reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the Handicrafts and Handloom Department Kashmir in its efforts to promote unique crafts like papier mâché, which he believes have immense potential in international markets….(KL)
