Kapil Sibal Pushes for SIT Probe into Electoral Bonds
Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal has urged the courts to establish a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine the electoral bonds issue, following the release of data by the State Bank of India and the Election Commission. Sibal emphasized that the issue requires thorough scrutiny, asserting that traditional probe agencies are inactive. He called attention to previous promises made by political leaders, highlighting the need for accountability.
Demand for Transparency and Accountability
Addressing a press conference, Sibal stressed the significance of investigating electoral bonds, labeling them as a major scandal alongside demonetization. He proposed the formation of an SIT similar to the one established for the 2G case, emphasizing the importance of transparency in political funding. Sibal also called for scrutiny into donations received by the PM-CARES fund, emphasizing the need for comprehensive investigation.
Data Revelations and Political Implications
The electoral bonds data unveiled significant donors, including Future Gaming and Hotel Services and Megha Engineering Infrastructure Limited, with substantial contributions to various political parties. The disclosure shed light on prominent beneficiaries, encompassing major political entities across the spectrum. Sibal underscored the need for transparency in political funding, particularly in light of the disclosed donations.
Election Commission’s Role and Transparency Measures
The Election Commission, in compliance with Supreme Court directives, facilitated the disclosure of electoral bonds data from the State Bank of India. Emphasizing transparency and disclosure, the Election Commission reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, aligning with Supreme Court mandates. The electoral bonds, instrumental in political funding, have drawn attention for their implications on transparency and accountability in the electoral process.
