The Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee has declared a “shutter-down and wheel-jam” strike in Pakistan-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) today, as reported by Dawn. This announcement comes in response to the reported detainment of 70 activists, purportedly aimed at thwarting a planned ‘long march’ to demand compliance with a February agreement between the committee and the government.
The committee has been leading a rights movement against perceived unjust taxes, particularly on electricity bills, demanding rates reflective of hydel power production costs in PoJK. Despite assurances from a ministerial committee to address these grievances, protests continued, culminating in planned demonstrations on May 11. However, recent police raids and detentions prompted clashes between authorities and protesters, resulting in injuries and escalating tensions.
In light of the crackdown, the UKPNP and JAAC have issued warnings against the use of force on peaceful demonstrators, threatening international protests if authorities resort to brutality. The unrest underscores broader grievances regarding taxation, inflation, and resource ownership in PoJK, highlighting deep-seated issues despite significant remittances aimed at development.
